I’m having a great trip down memory lane thinking about some of the great cupcake places in Kansas City. With so many cupcake places to go in Kansas City, it would be difficult, not to mention a huge sugar overload, to hit them all in one day. To ease the worried mind, I’m putting together fun cupcake itineraries for the adventurous sweet tooth!

Kansas City Originals Itinerary

First Cupcake Bakery in Kansas City

Boasting the name of being Kansas’s City original cupcake bakery, there’s no better place to start your day. Located in the historic River Market, just north of downtown Kansas City, this small boutique offers a wide selection of flavors to satisfy any taste buds. Go for one of the seasonal flavors.

First Mobile Cupcake Bakery
3 Girls Cupcakes

Next, your day will go on a little adventure. Kansas City’s first mobile bakery cruises the streets of Kansas City. Check out their Facebook or Twitter account to get instant updates on where the truck is located. Every week the schedule and special flavors are introduced. If a flavor really catches your eye, be sure to comment on their Facebook profile to hold a cupcake for you!

This next category gets a little tricky. But, to keep you in the center of Kansas City, the next original place is…

First Cupcake Bakery on the Country Club Plaza
Cupcake a la Mode

A boutique-style cupcake place, Cupcake a la Mode fits the bill perfectly for the clientele of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza. The Plaza (as locals call it) was designed in 1922 as the nation’s first suburban shopping district. Today, it boasts more than 150 shops and restaurants in the 15-block district, claiming as one of the top tourist destinations in the city. Cupcake a la Mode’s cupcakes are always fashionably ready for you for any season!

As you come down your sugar high on your Kansas City Original’s day, burn off some steam by strolling around Brush Creek or snagging some great finds in the Plaza. Then, get a good night’s sleep—tomorrow is another day back on the cupcake trail!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

In honor of this holiday surrounded by love, I want to say “I love you” to cupcakes. I know it might sound silly, but cupcakes have given me a joy and a passion that I get to share with all! I’ve been grateful to taste so many delicious treats in my years!

On this special day, I want to mention a few of my favorites… an old love and a new love.

3 Girls Cupcakes
My relationship with 3 Girls Cupcakes goes way back. I can still vividly remember the day I stalked the van around downtown Kansas City to try this concept of a “cupcake truck”. I was hooked. Something about her cupcakes just makes my taste buds explode! In all of their cupcakes I’ve tried, I’ve never had one that I didn’t like.

Buzz Bakery
This is a very new love of mine. We met at the beginning of this year during my bi-annual trip to DC. I immediately was captivated once I walked inside. My attraction grew stronger as I sipped on their coffee and bit into their cupcakes. I couldn’t get enough of them, so I made sure to visit them one more time before leaving.

I am truly thankful for my two cupcake loves. My life has been sweetened by their passions. Thank you for letting me share in your joys!

My heart of sweetness has a lot to give! Who knows what this year might bring… perhaps a few more cupcake loves will enter my life!

How far close are you? – a question that one of my very dear friends asked on my first night upon moving to Kansas City. Translation – Where are you?

Well, I feel this question is the only one to ask right now. Considering this is my first night in my new city, I needed to let you, my sweet friends and readers, where I am located.

This summer, I decided to pursue my educational goals and accept my admission to the Master of Science in Hospitality Management program at the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Sadly, this means I will no longer be around all the great cupcake shops in Kansas City nor discover any more of the city’s sweet secrets. However, as I’ve always stated, I will follow my sweet tooth wherever that may lead. So, for the next two years, I’ll be exploring and tasting all of Houston’s finest and sweetest places. And, I hope more time will be on my hands to get back into the kitchen for more baking attempts.

Thank you to all of my sweet friends and readers. I’ve had so much fun bringing you my finds and opinions in the cupcake world. I hope you continue to follow my journey!

Sweet Toasts and Cheers!

Bon Voyage Cupcakes

In one of my last weekends in Kansas City, I went over to my friend’s house for a farewell BBQ. Grilling out, drinks, friends and good times… And cupcakes?! As a complete surprise, I was graced with the lovely cupcakes from my friend and fellow cupcake/baking foodie, Kristen.

Banana Cupcakes with Vanilla Buttercream

When these bad boys were opened, banana flooded the entire room. And it only got better from there….

Wow. Ultra moist, banana infused, and sweet down to the core.

I had one of my “ahhhh” moments with this frosting. I almost fell off the chair…. It was rich, creamy, and it simply tasted fantastic. All the vanilla flavor with a hint of banana.

Nothing fancy with the presentation of the cupcakes. Packed in handy carry-all container and wrapped in a decorated cupcake holder, these cupcakes swirled to the top were ready for the party!

Sweet Endings
With the storage of the cupcakes, the banana flavor seeped up into the vanilla frosting. I’m sure that wasn’t the intention; however it was very welcomed flavor. It enhanced the banana experience to make it a full-blown flavor explosion!

Kristen was so gracious to let me take the remaining cupcakes home. I was ready to lick the frosting off of them all, but I decided to share the lovely cupcakes with my roommates. The best way to show how much they enjoyed them…

One of my roommates, Ashley, asked the other, Katie, if she wanted to split one. Katie agreed. However, after Ashley took her first bite, her eyes said it all. Needless to say, she did not share with Katie and Katie fully enjoyed a whole one to herself!

Thank you Kristen for the cupcakes and thank you Casey for hosting! I’m going to miss you ladies!

In a recent trip at to Zona Rosa in Kansas City, I was looking to kill some time. I randomly passed a sign advertising a new cupcake shop – Glass of Milk Cake Company. Ecstatically, I followed my way with help of the signs to find this new place.

I was hit by disappointment while I searched their menu and viewed all the beautiful little cupcakes in the display case. Was there not a vanilla-vanilla option? That seemed impossible for me, so I looked again… again… and again. I could get a vanilla cake, but it was topped with other flavors of frosting (chocolate, lemon, coconut). Or, I could get a chocolate cake, topped with vanilla buttercream. After much dilemma, I finally settled on the gluten-free Black Tie Affair. Chocolate cake topped with vanilla buttercream and a slight chocolate drizzle.

Black Tie Affair

Gluten-free cakes will always have a different taste than regular cupcakes. It’s hard to explain, but it has a grainy/cornmeal hint to it. Personally, I like the taste. I believe it adds a bit of bland/bitterness that keeps the cake from getting too sweet. It was really difficult for me to gauge the “goodness” of the cake since chocolate is not my forte.

Their buttercream was fabulous. Silky and smooth – just the way I like it. The vanilla flavor was pure and simple, and almost “crème-like”.

This was an elegant cupcake. Personally, I could have done without the chocolate drizzle, however, it did look as if the cupcake was on its way to a Black Tie Affair.

Sweet Endings
First of all, I still can’t believe they didn’t have a vanilla-vanilla option. To me, that’s a staple on every menu. They make vanilla cakes and the make vanilla buttercream… Why not have that on their daily menu?

See, no vanilla-vanilla option!

Second of all, their prices were ridiculously high. For normal cupcakes, it costs $3.50 plus tax. For the gluten-free cupcakes, the cost was a little over $4.00. Now, the price could be justified by its size. However, the size was regular. The market in Kansas City will not bear a cupcake of that size for that price for a new store.

All in all, I enjoyed their cupcakes. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a visit. Even though I adored their buttercream, I wouldn’t make the drive up there to pay that price for a cupcake, especially since they don’t offer my favorite flavor of cupcake.

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere… And that applies to cupcakes as well folks! KC Pin-Up Pastries, where cupcakes take on a new meaning, have some of Kansas City’s most unique cupcakes. And I got to try an array of their summer line-up of flavors!

“Hpnotiq, coconut and pineapple flavored cake. Filled with a tart Hpnotiq and pineapple gelee. Then topped with vanilla butter cream and your choice of design”

Instead of grabbing a cold drink, grab this cupcake on a summer night. This cake was bursting with hytonic. I was almost afraid to eat the whole thing because of how strong the alcohol flavor was… I could have needed a designated driver to take me home!

“Pink lemonade cake topped with UV Pink Lemonade Vodka. Garnished with a lemon drop”

Need a cool drink on a hot summer’s day? Their pink lemonade cupcake will clench your thirst. It was as if I stuck a straw in a fresh glass of lemonade. Be careful though – sipping just the frosting will be a bit sour. Make sure to mix them together for the best combination!

Pina Colada
“Pineapple and tropical punch flavored cake. Topped with coconut butter cream and rolled in toasted coconut.”

This cupcake screamed SUMMERTIME! The wonderful coconut flavor plus the super-creamy buttercream was delightful! However, I’m not a fan of the big coconut pieces… they’re just not my thing. But, the rest of the cupcake with all that coconut flavor? Sign me up!

Strawberry Fields Forever
“Sweetened wedding cake stuffed with chunks of sweetened strawberries. Topped with vanilla butter cream and sliced strawberries”

Buttercream = yummy! Cake ≠ yummy. The cake was hard and not very flavorful. I’m not sure if it had to do with the way the fresh strawberries were baked, or if it had to do with my handling of the cupcakes. But, regardless, this was my least favorite cupcake.

Blitzkrieg Bop
“Lemon cake topped with lemon butter cream and in the center it’s filled with cherry citrus glaze.”

You never know what you’re first reaction will be when you try a cupcake. I always sit in anticipation until my taste buds kick in. With this cupcake, I experience one of the “ahhhh” moments (these moments happen when I instantly fall in love with a cupcake and can’t help but say “ahhhh” or “mmmm” or “OMG”). They weren’t lying when they say that this cupcake is “an attack on your taste buds”. It was in very good way possible!

Sandra Dee
“Wedding white cake with a hint of almond flavoring. Topped with a delicious almond butter cream.”
I also experience an “ahhhh” moment with this cupcake. They weren’t kidding when they labeled it wedding cake… I swear I heard wedding bells after I ate this! It was full of almond flavor, cooked to a perfect consistency, and topped with a smooth, creamy, not-too-sweet buttercream. I want to have a wedding just so I can eat this again!

Sweet Endings

I truly enjoyed sampling all of these cupcakes. The buttercream was especially my favorite! It held texture while remaining smooth and delicious.

I do have to say that some of the infused cakes developed a different consistency that didn’t bring the best out of the cupcake. The flavors were great and I do think that was partly my fault. Summers in Kansas can be hot, and traveling with cupcakes isn’t conducive to maintaining freshness.

Everyone needs a splash of character and flavor to their cupcake. Sometimes eating a plain ol’ vanilla-vanilla can be boring (can’t believe I am admitting this…. VV is my go-to cupcake!).

I had so much fun with my cocktail hour with my cupcakes from KC Pin-Up cupcakes. They sure know how to cook up a mean cupcake. Out of all the cupcakes I tried, these two are my favorite – Sandra Dee and Blitzkrieg Bop! In addition to the summer flavors baked up for me, they have an extensive list of funky flavors (check out their menu of “Stars” and “Supporting Roles”) that is sure to spice up any cupcake experience.

Some of you might be thinking that I’m a Gigi’s Cupcakes stalker, and I very well may be! This past weekend, I got to try my third Gigi’s cupcake since Gigi’s opened a franchise in Overland Park recently. Considering the last cupcake I had from on her franchises I wasn’t impressed with, I was eager to try another location.

Upon walking in the store, I was again in frosting heaven. The three-inch frosting standard graced the top of every little cupcake. With so many beautiful cakes, my choice was difficult to make.

After much deliberation, I chose the Gluten-Free White Velvet Cupcake.

This was my first real gluten-free cupcake and I was unsure what to expect, but I was so excited to try! The cake tasted earthy, and a little grainy, and its texture was chewy and crumbly. However, after I scraped some of the frosting off, I could see a major dip in the center. That could have been caused by the weight of the frosting, however it looked more to be the shape of the original cupcake. I’ve never attempted gluten-free baked goods, so that may be a feature due to lack of typically baking agents.

Of course, I had WAY more frosting than I needed. And, that’s saying a lot from a person who eats frosting by the spoonful! The white chocolate frosting was creamy and delectable! It wasn’t too sweet, too buttery, or too thick—it was a flawless blend of frosting.

See? I could frost at least two other cupcakes with all that frosting!

I still get overwhelmed with the height of this cupcake! Next time, I’ll have to physically measure its height. For this cupcake, less really was more… just a little dusting of powdered sugar with a white chocolate piece adorned on top.

Sweet Endings
Surprisingly enough, I really enjoyed the gluten-free cupcake. As contradictory as it may sound, I almost preferred its grainy texture than to some gluten-loaded cupcake. It boasted a unique flavor that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Also, I was extremely impressed with this Gigi’s location. Not only did I enjoy their cupcakes, I noticed that they served The Roasterie coffee. It was refreshing to see a local influence in their store.

Third time is definitely the charm. I hope I can continue to visit other Gigi’s franchises throughout the country!
